New Tuesday (May 2 Recap)

jumpdock.gifJump, Little Children released their first live album since 1997's Buzz. It features the best of this years Dock Street, which was also, sadly, their swan song. I am anxious to see how the show translated to CD (I was at their last show...I cried like 8 times.) They of course couldn't fit every song on and some are sorely missed (vertigo, between the dim and the dark, etc. etc. etc), but the 23 songs include some of my favorite album tracks that are live standards (say goodnight, mexico), favorite album tracks that are rarely played live (b-13, requiem) and most importantly, old live standards not available on any official Jump releases until now, including my favorite Jump song (Forget My Loss) and many others that I love possibly more than anything from their studio albums (Sean O'Flaherty's Accordian, Taibreamh, Copper Kettle, Mountains So Grand, Green Fields of Canada)! So, despite being sad at the lack of some of my faves I will instead be very very very happy about all of the rarities that the album contains, since those are my favorite live tracks anyhow.
glen.jpg Glen's newest non-aware release sounds pretty on par with Winter Pays for Summer, but just closer to his live acoustic show. There are some guest vocalists like Kim Richey and Garrison Starr (woohoo!) on the track "Thank You" which sounds decidedly praise & worship Christian (eehhhh.) The highlight of the album for me is an EXTREMELY beautiful acoustic version of "Last Sunset" which has long been one of my favorite staples of Glen's live shows.
jon auer.jpgJon Auer's new CD "Songs From the Year of Our Demise" already got points from me for having a great tracked named "Six Feet Under" but the fact that the album is pretty catchy helped too. Jon is also the founder of the Posies and a member of Big Star. That's one hard-working man.
brandtson.jpg From Six Feet Under to (now broken up) Sixfeetdeep's Myk Porter's indie/emo band. That was an awful transition. Anyway, the songs I've heard make this sound like a great CD for playing on long summer drives. "Nobody Dances Anymore" reminds me a lot of VHS or Beta. "EarthquakesandSharks" starts with a Modest Mousesque riff, but ends up sounding a little more like an Everclear song. Oh well, I still love it, sue me.
gomez.jpgGomez is a British group that has been around for a handful of albums already. With their latest, "How We Operate," they are looking for a career-defining album (read: none of their CDs ever lived up to the critical acclaim of their first album.) Now, I've never been much into Gomez, but mostly because I had never invested much time into giving them a shot. But I can tell you I love the track "girlshapedlovedrug" off of their new album. The other tracks I've heard are pretty wonderful too. All in all it sounds like another fun summery album and I feel like it will be a good companion CD in your multi disc changer next to the new Guster album (coming soon!)

sunset.jpgBut hey, it doesn't look like that incestous Canadian scene has churned out another inbred, three nippled, but still loveable spawn this week. Fear not! Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug is in another band called Sunset Rubdown, which released their second LP, "Shut Up I am Dreaming." It's the kind of album that has song titles so long you have to resize your itunes window to be able to read it. If you enjoy Wolf Parade it is definitely worth checking out...and even if you dont, try it anyway. Why? Well...as one reviewer from itunes said, "this CD gave me a boner." And hell, any CD with that power deserves a shot.
hearts.jpgThe Court & Spark is a San Fransisco based alt-country number. I dig the track "We Were All Uptown Rulers." While not exactly the same, this CD might be a good choice for fans of Ryan Adams or acoustic My Morning Jacket.

monfrere.jpgMon Frere one is for my friend Ellen cause I think she would like it... It's kind of somewhere between the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Evanesence... less weird than the former less shoot me if I hear it one more time than the later. They lose points for having a song called "CleverBoi." Check out "You Don't Mind."
