Is just what I'm going through. At the moment that is extreme happiness.
I started listening to Mr. Damien Rice in early 2002 (hot on the heels of my return from Ireland). After moving to Kentucky, Damien was the first concert I saw... I drove by myself up to Louisville. The concert was easily one of the best I have seen (the only on that tops it was the final JLC show, and that was in large part due to a lot of emotional sentiment). I had gone not expecting much and instead had been floored. You can read more about that show on my friend Shannon's page. Speaking of which I have met a lot of my favorite people through Damo shows...Courtney, Shannon, Courtney again...and the rest (I learned that trick from early Gilligan's Island). I also got exposure to one of my current favorite bands: The Frames.
Even from the first shows I saw in early 2003, Damien had at least another album worth of material recorded and he promised it would be around soon. Every year since then I have listed the Damien Rice CD (along with Fiona Apple's long-awaited CD) as my most anticipated new CD of the next year on year end articles. We've instead received 4(!!!) releases of "O," a b-sides album (the contents of which I already owned having dilligently purchased all of the singels and a Live CD/DVD. Other than that the only new studio music we have heard have been Unplayed Piano and Cross-Eyed Bear. But no new album in sight.
If that weren't bad enough, Damien hasn't been back since I saw him in early 2004. 2 years with no hints of him coming back to the US.
According to the Damien Rice website, Damien Rice is currently planning a tour of the US for June/July with Fiona Apple. I think I just squealed. No. I'm sure of it.
While Damien apparently was recording his new album in 2004 and 2005, there is no release date planned as of yet, but this US tour is hopefully a good sign. Another good sign is found at fansite http://www.damienrice.co.uk which posted a report from Expressen in Sweden which said Damien new album was expected in May or June.
The site also has an extensive collection of unreleased live MP3s that I have enjoyed for quite awhile. However, on recent inspection many of the MP3s now include this message when clicked on "Not all tracks are available for download at present. New songs are being officially released which prohibit the distribution of some material..." Hmmm...hints at a tracklist perhaps? Here are the tracks with this message.

And if that wasn't good enough, Damien has been collaborating with Glen from the Frames on music for a movie that Glen is making.

COMMENTS I really really hope he comes somewhere near Chicago. We HAVE to see him!!! I will road trip if need be! Unfortunately I found that site with MP3s over a year ago and it had the same message about copyright... but maybe it still means a new cd is in site?! brotha, you gotta warn me if you're gonna link to my shit so i can unlock it. *does so* though i wonder how many people who don't actually know me are going to want to read my v. v. long-winded tale. ANYWAY. oh, damo. we gotta see a show together on this tour, yeah? it's like, the LAW. Hah, well, like 2 people read this right now anyway ;-) dude. (hi!) i hope this doesn't come off snotty, but i do hope that list is not indicative of a tracklist. lonely soldier and unplayed piano are so good, he obviously can still write. y'know? at this point there's no reason to not have new material. i say that both for selfish reasons and cos i don't want him to lose people's interest. :-) Well, you make a point... people like us who know those songs from seeing them live and live MP3s might be upset to see a new album just of those. If the above was the track list there would be no surprises on it for me, and that would be sad. However, I have been waiting for a long time to see those song realized in the form of fully produced studio songs, so I would be happy too. What I assume is that some of those songs will make the new album, some will be b-sides on singles and there will be some super new surprises on there too. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see... hopefully not too long though. For the love of poo I need to see him again! god, I don't think seattle will have quite the music scene that chicago does. :( sigh. He spilled beer on me at schuba's, you know. |
