 | New albums from April 18th.
Sure, Mat Kearney favors a spoken word rap that sometimes reminds me of Everlast or Crazy Town. He also reminds me a lot of Coldplay and John Mayer...and it actually meshes pretty well with the aforementioned rapping. His new CD, Nothing Left to Lose, features some favorites from his last album, Bullet, as well as new songs (many that he hasn't been playing at concerts recently.) This CD would be perfect for an urban church youth group, but give it a try, it might be perfect for you too. |
 | Here is a new CD for my Chapel Hil friends. While these NC guys have a difficult name to try and google they have a great sound which reminds me a bit of We Are Scientists (and they have played with them too!) Definitely recommended. |
 | After being pushed back for a couple of months (why?) the US release of Daniel Powter's album is finally here. It is probably a good thing, as it gave "Bad Day" time to ride the "You're Beautiful" wave into number one on the charts. There's some great surf off the shore of Over Playa. (Holy bad Spanish joke!). I actually think that Bad Day is a better song (and has a WAY better video) than Blunt's single...but the album itself isn't as strong. There are some good songs on the album, but there is a big middle chunk of it that sounds like Maroon 5 meets Macy Gray. Unfortunate. |
 | Elefant is currently being whored out all over the place on myspace as a featured band. According to a Rolling Stone's review, this album could have fit well into the 80's British invasion. The review also describes the album as "throbbing." Whoa. |
 | Tom Brosseau's "Empty Houses are Lonely" sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a lonely empty house. The music is minimal and poignant with the emphasis being on Brosseua's sometimes male sometimes female sounding vocals. Standout tracks include "Bars" and "The Broken Ukulele." |
 | I'm a fan of the Dresden Doll's "Coin-Operated Boy" (Thanks Ellen!) but I think as a whole they might be just a bit too weird for me. I'll stick with Azure Ray or K's Choice...which sound like a bit less weird versions. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that their lyrics are often times a little to...something...for me. Maybe obvious? Like the track "First Orgasm." There won't be any second coming/as far as I can tell/I arch my back cause/I'm very close now...Wow, I could live without that. I dig the tracks "Mandy Goes to Med School" with it's cabaret feel and "Sing" which sounds like it was made in anticipation of inclusion in a Buffy renunion special. Maybe they will blow me away at Lollapalooza. |
 | The Lovely Feathers (I keep wanting to call them the Lovely Bones. Damn you Alice Sebold!) are a Canadian band that labels themself as blossomy, extractive post-punk-infused eccentric pop. They also label themselves part pterodactyl, part eccentric dream-puppy. Um...right. Of course, coming from Canada they have some of that inbred scene behind them... "Hind Hind Legs" is produced by James Shaw from Metric and Broken Social Scene and Drew Malamad who engineered for Stars and the Dears. A couple of stand out tracks include "Frantic" and "In the Valley." Also of note is the sacreligious "Pope John Paul" with lyrics that shouldn't be funny really, but just make me laugh in spite of myself: Pope John Paul died today and we say/Pope John Paul where are you from?/KRAKOW POLAND! KRAKOW POLAND! I think it is so funny because it reminds me of the "Daniel Franco, where did you go" song from Project Runway. Maybe they can cover it. |
Some more great releases I couldn't be arsed to write about:

COMMENTS
I downloaded the DP album a few weeks ago after Michael played me Bad Day. Love the single but the album kinda drags along and is "blah" there's no real "happy" on it that stands out.
