New Tuesday
April 06, 2006Posted by Kyle
This most recent Tuesday brought the release of the new Flaming Lips album. Man, I can't believe it has been almost four years since the realase of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot." That means it has been almost four years since I graduated college. Yeesh. Judging from the clips I've heard it sounds like a pretty good offering, with a good amount of mellow but also some pretty weird guitary stuff too. The single, "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" sounds like a lot of fun, but I can see myself getting tired of the chorus quickly. Maybe. Either way, I'm excited for their new album. It is getting me pumped to see them at Lollapalooza (One of many bands it will be my first time seeing!)
The Concretes are an eight person Swedish band. The album has some beautiful female vocals that sound like they were snagged from an earlier generation. This might be my favorite release of the week.
Return to the Sea is the Islands debut album. The group was founded by members of the now defunct group "The Unicorns." The clips I've heard sounds fun, and there are a couple of guest appearances by members of the Arcade Fire on the album. You've got to love Canadian musical inbreeding!
Rascal Flatts is one of those groups that people you often hear ending sentences like "I don't like country but I like..." These are country songs with high cross-over appeal (very sacchrine poppy songs) and without super creepy (at least not in the typical country singer way) band members this album is sure to attract American Idolish/Kenney Chesney fans. They are a bit like a country version of Switchfoot and their music is what it is...an occassional guilty pleasure. Does the cover of the album make anyone else uncomfortable?
The Vines is historically Shayna's least favorite live performance ever. I think "Don't Listen to the Radio" sounds kind of catchy.
Not to be outdone, Babyshambles was winner of the 2006 Naomi Award for Worst Live Performance. Maybe they will tour with the Vines and have a crappy live performance off. Who would win? Pete Doherrty formerly of Libertines infamy made this album during the intermittent periods he wasn't in jail. I think the album sounds pretty ok, but maybe that's just my Naltrexone implant talking.
Others I don't have anything to say about:
Placebo, "Meds" - Morrissey, "Ringleader of the Tormentors"

The Flaming Lips could possibly be one of the top 5 best live groups I have ever seen. Just an awesome live show
